The Chilton Christian Academy girls got the monkey off their backs.
CCA beat Northside (Dothan), 44-36, on Thursday in an ACEA sub-state game. It was the sixth straight year the teams had met in such a situation, and the first time CCA had won.
“This is the first CCA girls team to go to state in Division I,” coach Todd Stephens said. “We have won state twice in the smaller Division II. We are the smallest school in Division I, as well, so we have definitely earned our spot.”
The Patriots (15-5) will play in the state final four tournament at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 19 against the Victory Christian-Flint Hill winner.
The hosts led the whole way but needed Summer Hall to drain two 3-pointers—six of her team-high 13 points—in the fourth period to seal the win.
Hall also recorded nine steals and eight rebounds.
Greda Brock posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Destiny Richards was close with nine points and 15 rebounds.

Both Chilton Christian’s boys and girls basketball teams won conference championships with home wins on Feb. 5 over Glen Iris (Birmingham).
The CCA boys won 53-45, and the girls took a 31-22 decision.
The win was especially important for the CCA boys because the conference championship means they will receive a bye into the state tournament in Tuscaloosa beginning on Feb. 18.
Had they lost, the Patriots (14-6) would have had to win a sub-state game to qualify for the season’s final tournament.
The CCA girls (12-5) still have work to do to make state. The Patriots will host Northside (Dothan), the No. 2 team out of its conference, on Feb. 11.
The CCA girls on Friday went on an 11-4 run to end the game after Glen Iris (7-6) in the fourth period closed to within two points at 20-18.
Senior guard Summer Hall did much of the damage, scoring her team’s last five points.
Hall scored a game-high 23 points. No other Patriot scored more than two points.
The scoring in the boys game was somewhat more balanced. Tyler Gray, Matthew Klein and Austin Shropshire each scored 14 points to lead CCA.
Glen Iris (12-7) was within five points of the lead at the end of the third period but was put away by a series of free throws.
Chilton’s Zach Brown was fouled on a drive with 5:34 remaining in the game. The visiting defender complained about the call and was issued a technical foul.
Brown made his two free throws, and then Gray drained two more to give CCA a 38-26 lead without any time running off the clock.

Chilton Christian Academy’s boys and girls basketball teams came back from a holiday break with dramatic wins on Jan. 5.
The CCA girls were down by as many as 10 points in the first half but used a 12-1 run in the fourth quarter to take the lead and pull away from Flint Hill Christian (Bessemer) by a score of 43-35.
Senior shooting guard Summer Hall recorded a double-double for CCA with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore center Destiny Richards chipped in nine points and eight rebounds.
The boys game was even closer.
The Patriots trailed 34-29 going into the final period, but the defensive intensity of Austin Shropshire and Matthew Klein helped tie the game at 45 with 12 seconds left to play.
Klein stole the ball, was fouled, and hit one free throw for the lead, and the CCA defense kept the Flames from getting a good look at the basket.
Shropshire scored 10 points in the game, and Klein had 10.

Chilton Christian Academy’s girls basketball team evened its conference record at 1-1 with a 35-25 win over Victory Baptist (Millbrook) on Dec. 11.
The Patriots (7-2 overall) picked up the win using a run-and-gun system installed this season.
“We have traditionally been a team that slows the ball down and runs designed sets, but the girls wanted to pick up the pace and try something new,” CCA coach Todd Stephens said.
Stephens said the team’s lone senior, guard Summer Hall, has had much to do with the team’s success.
Hall recorded nine points and five steals against Victory, but sophomore center Greda Brock led the team in scoring with 13 points.
“It has helped having some new players step up and [Hall] lead the way,” Stephens said. “The girls have a lot of confidence in her. After all, she has been playing for me since 7th grade.
“We have learned to read each other like a book, and she has become the floor general. Our new style is coming together, and we should be rolling good by the start of the second half of the season.”
CCA’s boys were also victorious against Victory, winning 59-49.
Sophomore shooting guard Matthew Klein and junior center Tyler Gray each had 15 points.
Senior forward Tim Harris scored 12 points.

JEMISON – Chilton Christian Academy’s boys and girls basketball teams were victorious on Dec. 4, the school’s Homecoming.
The boys team (9-2) defeated Mellow Valley (Ashland), 58-37, behind Tim Harris’ 22 points and 16 rebounds. Tyler Gray contributed 14 points and seven rebounds.
The girls team (6-2) won, 40-17, and was led by Summer Hall’s 15 points.
Greda Brock, Alissa Harris and Jessica Standifer all scored six points.
Hall was named Homecoming Queen shortly after the girls game, and Hannah Bolton was named Elementary Princess.
On Dec. 1, both CCA teams played their conference openers, at Brooklane.
The boys team won, 60-45.
Sophomore guard Matthew Klein scored 15 points, Gray, a junior center, had 12 points and junior forward Zach Brown added 11 points.
The girls team fell, 46-44.
Standifer scored a team-high 15 points.
Freshman center Destiny Richards was just shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, and another freshman, power forward Rebekah Kirkland, had 10 points.

Chilton Christian Academy’s boys basketball team lost their legs during an appearance in the West Florida (Milton) Tournament over the weekend, but their were still some positives for the Patriots.
CCA (7-2) went 1-2 in the tournament, but coach Chris Jones said his team will benefit from the competition and has learned what it needs to work on to improve.
“Zone offense,” Jones said about what will be the main focus. “We need to move the ball better, quicker, and make more shots.
“Defensively, we’re a solid unit, but offensively we need to find a go-to guy that can make shots. But it’s still early in the year.”
The CCA shooters weren’t helped by their schedule leading up to the tournament.
Even before the bus ride of longer than three hours, the Patriots played a game on Nov. 17, and three players—Tim Harris, Matthew Klein and Austin Shropshire—participated in a 3.16-mile cross-country competition on the weekend of Nov. 14.
“We were just tired,” Jones said. “We got down there and won that first game, but then that was it.”
CCA defeated Northside (Louisville, Ky.) 45-33 but lost to Berean (Jacksonville, Fla.) 43-23 and host West Florida Baptist 61-55.
Junior forward Zach Brown scored 26 points in three games.
