Girl Scouts overcome tough ’08

From staff reports

Cookie sales for Junior Troop No. 7012 in Jemison in the spring of 2008 was, in a word, disappointing.
The troop sold over 1500 boxes of cookies, but a large portion of the troop’s cookie money was never turned in to the council.
The disheartened girls did not have enough money to go on their annual end of the year trip, and many girls did not receive their recognition prizes.
Even after all the disappointment the fourth grade girls had been through, they stayed true to the Girl Scout Slogan to “Do a Good Turn Daily.”
The girls were determined that something good was going to come out of this bad situation.
That fall the troop donated over 200 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to U.S. military troops overseas.
In January 2009, Troop 7012 received a thank you letter from an Air Force Soldier stationed at Kirkuk Regional Air Base in Iraq.
An excerpt from the letter states, “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the ladies of Girl Scout Troop 7012 for providing us with all those delicious cookies.”
The letter continues with, “Members of the 226 Combat Communications Group mailed us 5 cases of the cookies you had provided. We had so many cookies that we had to spread them out all over the base (or risk most of the squadron putting on an additional 10 pounds per person). Let’s just say we made lots of new friends with these cookies.”
The letter was signed by First Sgt. Steven Kautzman.
The Girl Scout Troop has received word back that at least three armed forces service branches — the Army, Navy and Air Force received a portion of the cookies sent out last Fall by their troop.
The Junior Girl Scouts of Troop 7012 bridged to Cadette Troop No. 340 in Sept. 2009.
The girls are now in the sixth grade and continue to be committed to helping others.
The girls voted in December to participate in next year’s ‘Gift of Caring” Girl Scout cookie drive, and will be distributing cookies collected at area Homeless Shelters for Mom’s and their children.
For their cookie donations of 2008, the members of Troop No. 340 were awarded the US Army Freedom Team Salute Commendation at their semi-annual Court of Awards Ceremony on Dec. 19, 2009.
Girls received a letter from the U.S. Army Chief of Staff, a Freedom Team Salute Certificate of Appreciation, and an official Army Patch to wear on the back on their Girl Scout Uniform.
